Celebrating Celebrities!

There’s been a ton of celebrity news in 2020 — and you need to know it!  In today’s edition:  Cardi B’s off again, on again marriage; tragedy for Chrissy Teigen and John Legend; “President” Kanye West (?!), and Meghan Trainer with a big announcement.  Let’s start celebrating celebrities.!

First up, Cardi B had filed a divorce from Offset in December 2019, claiming their marriage was “broken.” She also wanted to take full custody of their two-year-old daughter, Kulture! But now, Cardi and Offset have announced they are getting back together. Cardi said she was just “teaching him a lesson.”

Was this just another publicity stunt? “They’re calling attention to themselves, maybe they’ll drop an album next,” said Chris McDermott a teacher at WMS.

(In an unrelated story, Offset also made headlines in October when he was detained after a group of Trump-supporters called the police on him for allegedly brandishing a gun at them from his car!  Offset live-streamed much of the incident. He was released a short time later, but his passenger was arrested on gun charges.)

Our next story is a sad one:  Chrissy Teigen and John Legend announced that they had a miscarriage in September. Teigen posted the news to Instagram with the caption: “On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”  Jeffery Schonfeld the Journalism teacher at WMS said, ”We can all empathize for anyone going through this.” Thoughts and prayers, Chrissy and John 🙁

This next one might sound like a joke — but it’s the real deal: Kanye West was running for president!  WHAT!!! West first announced his was thinking about running way back in 2015.  And then on July 4th, 2020 the rapper made it official as a candidate for the 2020 election with “The Birthday Party”(get it?).

Andrew Watson an 8th grader at Williamsburg says, “He won’t get a lot of votes. Older people don’t know who he is. I don’t think a 65-year-old would know who he is.”

“I feel that it’s a cultural stunt,” “He’s what you call a provocateur,” “He would make Kim secretary of state, and his kids a party of the cabinet,” said Chris McDermott, a 7th grade teacher at WMS.

President Kanye got a nice ring… maybe he’ll write a song about it???

And speaking of the election, many celebrities are encouraging people to vote. A-list women like Cardi B, Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, Sandra Oh, Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, Kylie Jenner, and Jennifer Lopez; and their male counterparts, including LIL Dicky, Michael B. Jordan, LIL Pump, Leonardo DiCaprio, Prince Harry, Dwayne Johnson, Stephen Curry and many more. They’re all speaking out on social media to let people know that their voices matter and that they can help change the world!

And we wrap things up with “baby news.” Singer Meghan Trainor and actor husband Daryl Sabara are pregnant with their first child.  Meghan shared this news on the Today Show with Hoda and Jenna, telling them “We were thinking about who do I tell first, and I was like, I told Hoda that since I was 19 going to the TODAY show. I will have the most babies in the world.” Meghan also said, “You know what I’m saying? Let’s knock it out. Let’s do it all at once. You and me. I want twins and triplets.” Congrats, Meghan and Daryl!

Last thing:  don’t listen to the haters! Some people — like Arlington resident Dana R. —  don’t have a very high opinion of celebrities:  “It’s entertaining yes, but not important,” she said.  But the truth is, if it’s interesting to you, it’s important, too!

Celebrities are always making news — and we’ll have plenty more for you next time.  Deuces!!
